#TopTen Things You Need To Do In Your Service Year

Today we will be talking about the top ten things you need to do during your NYSC service year. There are lots of productive things that you could be involved in asides your primary assignment. They include:
  • WRITE A CV: The first major mistake I made as a CM was not building my curriculum vitae or resume early. It is essential during this period in order to help you realize your strong points and weaknesses and thus help your focus on your career path. Writing your CV makes you prepared for the highly competitive labour market that you will face after your service year which makes you stand out among your peers and puts you ahead of the pack in your quest for your dream job.
  • WRITE A PRO. EXAM: In the course of your service year, there are professional exams that can be written to boost your CV. It is no longer news that the first degree is relatively rampant so why not stay ahead of the pack by writing a professional exam. All you have to do is find one that you have a deep interest in and that applies to your field of study and your dream career and make the best use of it.
  • APPLY FOR JOBS: The CV that you have taken time to write should not be left to gather dust in your cupboards. During your service year, you can use it to apply for jobs in any organization. As they say, there is no harm in trial and you have nothing to lose by attempting interviews even if you do not end up getting selected. We have had cases of corps members securing employments during their service year. It is part of a learning process where you gather experience that will later help you in life. It is a win-win situation for you.
  • LEARN ANOTHER CULTURE: This is definitely one of the major motives of the NYSC scheme. You shouldn’t just allow yourself pass through the scheme but you should also allow it pass through you. You should endeavor to make a connection to the environment. You should be able to ensure that you learn about their culture, food, clothing, customs and norms and most importantly, learn their language too. By doing these, you are helping the dreams of our great nation, fostering unity and building ONE NIGERIA.
  • LEARN TO MANAGE: It is no news that N19800 is nothing to the average Nigerian student but it is what you are required to survive on for a whole month and in some cases, make savings. I thought I couldn’t live on such a low amount too but I survived and my management skills today is topnotch in terms of savings. You can too. It helps your survival skills and it is your first test at knowing if you can survive on minimum wage without help from your parents.
  • LEARN A SKILL: It is an open secret that having a first degree is not an assurance of a well-paying job these days so it is quite a good idea to use the service year to learn a skill that makes you your own boss. Virtually anything can be learned and nothing should be looked down on. It just might be your own goldmine you are shunning.
  • BUILD A BLOG: Yes I agree there are so many blogs around and it keeps increasing but if you have that special idea, you can just use it creating your own blog and carving a niche for yourself. What’s more? You also make money while doing that or you could get to build a mansion maybe. Sounds coo, right?
  • RUN A BUSINESS: Do you know the best way to make money? Its finding the current problem around you and finding a solution to it. You can as well turn that to your business during you service year. It could range from buying and selling items that are needed to writing project materials and making money off it to varieties of things. What’s better than fulfilling the needs of people around you while also having a fat pocket anyway?
  • EXPLORE YOUR TALENT: Do you think you have any talents? There is no better time to explore it than the service year when you don’t have a CGPA to build and you have your total freedom. It may range from your natural ability to sing or dance or even handle mechanical stuffs. You have the opportunity of a whole year to explore it and see where it leads.
  • SOCIALIZE:  Its last on this list nut its basically what most of us put first. However, this is a little different; I call it ‘meaningful socialization’. As a corps member, your service year should be used to have meaningful friends that will be able to impact your life positively, meet executives at your work that can help your career or even meet that dream partner and get married hehe. In any case don’t pass out without having added to your circle of friends and associates. Meaningful ones!
I guess my ten is up but please feel free to add yours in the comment box.
